Materialize

Fabric surrounds us. It is on our bodies, in our space, and moves with us. In Andrea Myers' work, she translates found, donated, and re-purposed fabrics into densely patterned fabric installations and picture planes. Using the language of color field painting combined with a gestural and rebellious approach to quilt making, disparate color combinations, organic formations and shifting shapes merge. Zigzags of fabric brush strokes pulse on and off the wall, transcending the original form and function of the material.
Quick collage cutting and haphazard machine-sewn stitching that resembles drawn lines fuse technicolor swatches into an immersive whole, enveloping and embedding the viewer into a soft emotive setting. Myers' labor-intensive installations fill the peripheral view with saturated color, repetitive rectangular striations, and meandering sewn lines that cut through the picture plane. Dense patterning stretches across the surfaces, suggesting expansive views of imagined waterways, skyscapes, and ero-sions, or something and somewhere in between. The artworks in these galleries are in constant flux of becoming, existing in a space that is not quite sculptural nor flat, moving beyond their perceived materiality.
